Breast Cancer Walk

Donations for the breast cancer walk can be turned in at the Honors Center (WU G25). There will be a donation box at the movie night on Sept 30th. Donations for the Breast Cancer Walk must be in by Wednesday, Oct 1st. I would like to raise more money than we did last year. We raise $405 last year.

For those we are walking, We will be meeting in the parking lot near Kettler at 7:30 am. We will be car pooling to Headwaters Park.

If you ordered a shirt, the cost is $8.00.

Qualifications for officers are as follows: minimum of 3.3 GPA and have taken, be taking, or will take at least 1 cr hr Honors Classes.

Irish Immersion Festival

The Honors Student Group is co-sponsoring the Irish Immersion Festival on January 25 & 26. We need volunteers for the event on campus on Saturday January 26. The Festival is all day, but you don't have to volunteer the entire time. You get to check out the festival too.
Since the IPFW campus is a "dry" campus, the kick-off party is on Friday, January 25 at JK O'Donnell's in downtown Fort Wayne.
Come join us for some good Irish craic (=FUN) at the new music center building on campus.

Decorating the center will be done on Friday, November 9 at about 6:00 pm. It will be a potluck event, so bring food and/or snacks to share. Since the theme for Homecoming week is "007-Licence to Thrill", we will decorate the center according to the music of the decades of 60s to the 90s. If you have old posters or the like, please bring this.

Saturday was the Breast Cancer Walk and we had 10 people attending the walk from our group. We exceeded our goal of raising $250 by $205 (i.e. we raised $455) !! Well done!!

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, October 16 at noon in the Honors Center. Bring your lunch and join us. We will be discussing the next movie/discussion night and the upcoming Homecoming Week. We are going to decorate the Honors Center in time for Homecoming.

Our next discussion/movie night is on Wednesday, October 24 at 7:30 pm in Cole Commons.
Our topics are: The impact on American culture by foreign cultures and vice versa and The impact of computer graphics on movie-making. The movie is: "Transformers".

Our first Discussion & Movie for the semester will be this coming Wednesday, September 12 at 7:30 pm at Cole Commons (student housing). We will be watching Al Gore's documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" and discuss Global Warming.

We will have our last movie night for this semester on Friday, April 20, which is the last day of Spring Fling Week. Since the theme for this year's Spring Fling is "The Game of Life" our movie is Sony Pictures' "Benchwarmers".
Join us at 7:30 pm in the Honors Center (Walb G25) for free food and soda. The movie will start at 8:00 pm. Please bring snacks or dessert to share if you can.
We will announce the results of the election of officers for the 2007-2008 school year during this event, so please be sure to attend.

On Thursday 4/5/2007 we will be having a movie night in the Honors Center from 7:30 to 10:30 PM. Pizza and refreshments will be provided, please bring a snack to share. We will be watching Warner Brothers Production's Happy Feet.

Also, during the Spring Fling in April, the student group will be helping collect cans for Habitat for Humanity during the Last Bash Barbeque. Check the blog for more information at a later date.

In case you aren’t quite ready for Spring Break to end, the Honors Student Group will have a Game Night on Monday, March 12, 2007. It will run from 7:30 to 10:30 in Walb Union G 08 (the room behind the cafeteria). There will be many games available to play (Twister, Monopoly, Life, etc. and playing cards will also be available), but you may bring your favorite game if you like. Food will also be provided, but feel free to bring a snack or desert to share. Bring a friend or two as well, the more the merrier!

Also, our next movie night is scheduled for Tues 3/20 at 7:30 in the Honors Center. We will be watching “Little Miss Sunshine.” Pizza and refreshments will be provided. Hope to see you all there!

Meeting 1/26: Unofficial Minutes

In case you weren’t able to make the meeting on 1/26, here are some of the things we discussed:
-Movie Nights- Planned for Mon 2/12, Tues 3/20, Thur 4/5, and Fri 4/20 at 7:30PM. More information will be posted about the movies being shown and location, but we are looking at showing the movies in the Honors Center.
- Game Night- We will have a game night on Monday, March 12 at 7:30 PM. This will be an opportunity for students to bring their favorite games and show off their skills. More information will be available soon. Twister, Monopoly, Checkers, and Chess will be provided along with refreshments.
- MEHA- The student group will be submitting a proposal about the First Year Experience (Learning Communities) within the Honors Program. We hope to present at MEHA, but will know for sure by March 1. Also, don’t forget to reserve your spot for MEHA by Friday, 2/23.
-We are also planning on participating in a service project this semester, if you have any ideas please e-mail me at mourar01@ipfw.edu.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Friday 2/16 at 1PM in the Honors Center. If you are unable to make this time, please let me know of the times that would work best for you so that I can try to schedule meetings accordingly.

If you wish to participate in the Walk, you need to:

Sign up in the Honors Center
Fill out the T-shirt order form in the Honors Center before Thursday, Sept 14
Pick up a donation sheet from the Honors Center
Get friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, etc. to donate to the Walk.
Make sure to take the day (or at least until about 1PM) off of work.

Okay, So Who Wants Muffins?

I think you know what I’m already going to say. Who wants Muffins?

Nobody? I didn’t think so.

We’ve had an amazing year with the Honors Student Group. I think we’ve seen just about every single damn emotion, from amazing success to abject failure. Best of times, worst of times and the like.

But we made it. This year is over. Some of us are graduating, everyone is moving on. Everyone can put an award-winning student group on their resume.

But before we head off into the great unknown, some people need to be recognized. Keep in mind these people are in no particular order, just whatever I decided to type first.

These are our awards for the year:

Alicia – Best Group Idea Creator. Katrina Relief. Obstacle Course. You do understand your efforts were the clincher for winning us the award.
Abbie – The Glue/Best Gift Bag Maker. I fell apart just before the Obstacle Course, and Abbie was the one that kept things together, kept me together. Drove me home from Toledo after the MEHA craziness. Don’t know what I would have done this year without her.
Callie – Perfect Attendance/Best Gift Bag Maker. Attended nearly every single meeting of the Honors Club, did amazing things with the Obstacle Course Gift Bags
Felix – The Life of the Party Award. You aren’t even in the Honors program, but shit if you didn’t do more than I did hanging up flyers and helping out with so many events. I’m sorry I crushed your tricycle.
Lauren – Best Secretary/Best Ticker Seller/Best Prop Owner. Lauren, where the hell would we be without those pink flags? And you actually sold a ticket. As in, someone paid money. I think that makes one person out of all of us, right?
Ryan – The Brains. Pretty much this group wouldn’t have even happened this year if Ryan hadn’t turned in the event form. He kept me and everyone on track this year, and quite literally the group wouldn’t have done one-half of the events we did this year if he hadn’t been a part.
Anna – Rookie of the Year/Best Prop Master. Kept us together with the obstacle course race. Attended nearly all of the meetings. Had amazing shoes. What more is there to life?
Travis – Best Dorm Member. Got our flyers up in the dorms. Attended nearly every movie night, coming even after working all day (I wouldn’t have even thought of making it after work).
Art – The Man, the Myth, the Engineer. Organized camping trip in beginning of year. Helped with Hurricane Katrina and even brought doughnuts. Helped diffuse some of the tensions created at MEHA.
Ross – Only Member Who Kept Us On Track/Best MEHA help. On the frantic night when we were trying to make a poster. Ross gave the group amazing ideas and helped steer us away from crapola, in addition to attending several of the movie nights.
Melissa – Best Treasurer. Let’s be honest, I have no bleeping idea how much money we have. I have no idea what our account number is. I’ve never signed a check off in my life. I can’t keep track of anything. Without Melissa, we’d be broke. Proabably dead too.
Nate – Got us what we needed when we needed it. Pelzer, Allocations, etc. I mean that: thank you man.

For better or worse I’m not going to forget this year and everything we have done. Thank you all for your help, I’m sure that I am forgetting someone, but forgive me if there has been an omission.

Let’s hear it for the honordons.

A Grand Proposal

I hereby propose a grand proposal that we, the afore mentioned group, go out to a nice restaurant (or, in the case of us being broke college students, a semi-nice restaurant) and sup in the warm glow of the knowledge that we got through the year with only minor injuries and no deaths. It will be an end-of-year, end-of-an-era gala, if you will. Should anyone else find interest in this grand proposal, submit suggestions as to where and when this monumental occasion should take place. Perhaps this may also be an event that we can cunningly persuade the school to pay for in some way, though that might be reaching to far.

Here is some news:

You have been scheduled to present because there were only two posters
and hence the organizers thought that it might be better to give you a
session.

In a way it is easier to present. No hassle about the poster. They
said you could bring your poster and talk.
If you prefer two or three HSG members(who are fairly actively
involved) can do a joint presentation. I suggest you make it
interactive!

So, any suggestions?

The official night for making the poster is going to be Wednesday, at the Honors Center, at 8:00. Please add any suggetions/comments here.

starting line- corner of Neff and Parking
finish line- path from Kettler to CM beside Neff

3. The Obstacle Course- Two Teams
a) Person A- Spinning around a bat 10 times.
b) Person A- Runs to piñata, carrying bat, and beats piñata.
c) Person A- retrieves pennant and carries it to Persons B & C
d) B&C (one blindfolded) do a 3-legged slalom and beat a piñata.
e) B&C retrieve pennant and pass it off to Person D.
f) Person D proceeds carrying a bouncy-ball on chopsticks.
g) Person D passes the pennants to Person E.
h) Person E takes the pennants and rides a tricycle to the finish line.

The next movie night will be This Monday.... March 20th and 7:45 pm. There will be subs, and the movie will be "Walk the Line," the Academy-Award winning biopic about Johnny Cash!

For all those who don't know, the Honors Group has a whole day of Spring Fling to organize--Revenge of the Nerds, obstacle course style. In plain English, the Honors Club is organizing an obstacle course race during the school spirit week of Spring fling that pits professors against students, with a prize of gift baskets at the end. The obstacle course includes a tricycle ride, carrying a marble with chopsticks, and breaking SEVERAL pinatas. I will post a picture of the obstacle course track (on the grassy knoll) soon.

I really, really, need you guys to help on this. Really. Really.

What this means, dudes and dudettes, is that we have a few major areas that we need people to volunteer to man up:

1. PROPS - Anna has already agreed to be prop master, but she will need help

2. TICKET GURU - We need someone to design and organize ticket sales (1$ each)

3. MONEY COLLECTION BOX GURU - Pretty self explanitory there

4. HELPERS ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT

5. MARKETING GURUS - Help spread the word

6. RECRUITERS - To get people to participate, especially professors

7. GIFT BASKET MAKERS - People to ask businesses to donate small items/gift certificates for the gift baskets for all the contestants

Appeal To Pity

Dear Friends,

I would like to appeal to your sense of pity and throw myself upon the mercy of the student group.

Posters have not yet been hung for the movie that will take place next Monday, despite the fact that they have been sitting in the Honors Center for about a week now.

I know that there has simply been a miscommunication in the group, and as we haven’t had a group meeting in a while I am sure it is the strain of tests and other pressing appointments that has left the posters on the table.

However, I would like to propose that we either scale back our events, in order to make things more manageable for me to do, or garner more group participation in planning and helping out with events. This also extends to MEHA.

I am available through e-mail, or by phone; please contact me if you have any questions. Please leave comments on the blog as well pertaing to group participation. IF you have comments about MEHA please contact me directly.

Here is a brief rundown of the last meeting

Campus-Wide Spring Event:
We want to host a booth or event at this. An idea that was popular is an obstacle course, with crazy stunts and most likely pinatas. ( We have extras). If anyone has ideas on this, or would like to volunteer, please comment.

April Freshman eligibility Event:
We are looking for students to form a panel for Q&A sessions during the Freshman eligibility Event on April 30, 3-6 p.m. There will also be free food after, providing for an opportunity to mingle with incoming freshman and parents. This is important, people. Freshman=New Blood=Higher Numbers=More fun. If you are interested, please send questions and RSVPs to Pam @ manorp@ipfw.edu

MEHA:
Although it seems a far way off, MEHA is drawing closer that you think. This year it is in Toledo, April 7-9. This is an all-expenses paid trip, and a great way to meet and mingle with other Honors students from other schools. The group as a whole is looking to purchase customized T-shirts and create a poster board of the event we have hosted so far. Individuals are encouraged to create their own presentation for the event. If there are any questions, please email me @ akeyln01@ipfw.edu We are hoping to have a sure number of attendees by Mid-March.

For some reason all of the posters that I had posted in Walb (to advertise the event) were ripped down, and I don't know why. I will let you know as soon as I find out.

For now we need to rely on word-of-mouth advertising. Please tell your friends and family to come out to the event!

Dave Pelzer Lecuture is on Again!

As you remember we were scheduled to have a lecture from Dave Pelzer (http://www.davepelzer.com/) earlier in the year, but he was called to help with victims of Hurricane Katrina and understandably the date had to be postponed. Now, in the new year, we will in fact host Mr. Pelzer here on campus!

Dave Pelzer will be here on January 17, 2005 speaking in Walb Union Ballroom at 7:30pm. Afterwards, there will be a reception for the Honors/Educators for Excellence/Psychology clubs because they were involved in helping get him here. Everyone interested needs to RSVP for the lecture in the ballroom to sit up front. Krista Marcum is going to try and get seats up front for anyone who wants to go to the lecture. Please rsvp with the Honors Center or e-mail me to resevere your seating.

Also, the Honors Group has volunteered to hang fliers for the event, since Educators for Excellence is doing the rsvp's for the event and the event after the lecture. If anyone is interested in hanging fliers, again please let me know.

Notes from Last Meeting, December 1st 2005

We had a very, very small number of students show up on Thursday, so we will try and find a better day for meetings. However, here are the notes of what happened:

Toys for Tots is Here!
The most important point that we discussed was that the Toys for Tots drive is here! The bin is outside the Honors Center every day until the 9th of Decemeber, so if you have the means please bring in a toy to make someone's Christmas special! Please spread word-of-mouth to your friends and family as well; the more the merrier, I say.

Honors Events for Next Semester
Since there really weren't enough students present to voice opinions about what has happened this semester, we will have another group meeting--over Christmas break--to go over the past and future events of the Honors Center. Please e-mail me at kathlizabeth [at] hotmail [dot] com with times that you would be free. If we would like to continue with the Movie nights, or perhaps branch out into other events as well, let's do--but we need to plan ahead!
